Friendly’s, the ice cream sundae and restaurant chain based out of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, announced late yesterday it was closing all 14 of its Ohio-based locations. All of the Ohio locations are owned by a franchisee, Apex Eagle Hospitality Inc.
Friendly's released a statement on behalf of Apex Eagle:
"These closings are regrettable, however, continuing operation was no longer viable."
Nearly all of the locations that closed on November 25th in Ohio had been continuously operating since the 1970s.
As of this writing, Friendly's has not released information on potential closings in other states. The chain, which still operates over 300 locations across the country, has suffered from a gradual decline in popularity over the years, and filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code in 2011. Friendly’s closed 63 restaurants in six states as part of its restructuring. An affiliate of Sun Capital Partners Inc. purchased Friendly’s assets through a sale process conducted in the bankruptcy case. On January 9, 2012, Friendly’s closed 37 additional stores.
