While some in the media believe that reported data breaches are becoming white noise, a recent survey issued by creditcards.com indicates that 45 percent of Americans surveyed said they would "definitely not" or "probably not" shop at some of the retailers recently affected by major data breaches during the upcoming holiday season. Sixteen percent said they definitely would not return to a retailer if the store had been hacked and 29 percent said they probably would not shop at such stores. Just one in eight said they are more likely to shop with credit cards this season.
Will those polled truly avoid the many retailers that have suffered data breaches? Will shoppers go old school and return to shopping with cash? Only time will tell. However, Black Friday and those irresistible sales may cause some of those surveyed to show up and spend.
