COLUMBUS, Ohio - A battle involves millions of dollars that are hanging in the balance with two cases before the Ohio Supreme Court. At issue who gets the vast wealth from mineral rights when it comes to drilling for underground oil and natural gas.

The court battles includes whether heirs can assert claim to mineral rights under the Ohio Dormant Mineral Act (ODMA). Does a lease to drill for natural gas qualify as a title transaction under the same act. The two cases before the seven justices have caused confusion and trepidation amongst energy companies, drillers and landowners. The justices are well aware of what is at stake.

"We are getting a first look of a freight train coming down the tracks at us," said Justice Paul Pfeifer while questioning one of the attorneys arguing before the court.
