2017 LeadingAge Ohio Annual Conference: Stronger Together!
On June 6, 2016, Governor Kasich signed into law House Bill 523 and officially legalized the use of medical marijuana in the state of Ohio. However, the Ohio medical marijuana program, still faces significant hurdles from a legal and implementation standpoint. The specific provisions of the law are still in the works and medical marijuana still remains illegal at the federal level. Isabelle Bibet-Kalinyak, a health care attorney, and Nicole Coniglio, a Psychiatric and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner practicing in long-term care settings, will explain the scope and limitations of the Ohio medical marijuana program from a legal perspective and analyze the clinical evidence, or at times the lack thereof, supporting the use of medical marijuana, notably in the elderly population.
