As I predicted more than two years ago, the natural gas liquids prevalent in Ohio’s Utica shale promise to benefit local manufacturers who need products refined from the liquids for their manufacturing processes. The chemical and plastics industries are particularly benefited. These industries originally located in the region partly because of the oil and gas boom here at the beginning of the 20th century. Ironically, the shale that is the target of today’s drillers was the original source of the oil and gas drilled at shallower depths under cap rocks a century ago.
