The release of Medicare data on April 9 is giving the public a peak at which physicians are accepting Medicare, which are not, and how much they are billing. Average amounts paid varied drastically depending on a physician’s specialty, with oncologists (#1) and ophthalmologists (#2) the highest billers per capita, largely due to expensive drugs they prescribe. Nephrologists (#3) were next, presumably due to the long-term nature of dialysis care. Though the official CMS disclaimer seems to be “Don’t read anything nefarious into the highest billers,” the Wall Street Journal points out that many of the individuals at the very top of the list are under federal investigation, or indictment. One thing is clear, you do not want to be an outlier on this list.
